Weigh-In Wednesday 1 Dec 2010

.

Each Wednesday until Christmas we’d like you to “weigh” in and tell us about a goal you’ve accomplished, a milestone, anything that will push you to go a little further on your weight loss path. Add your post link to the bloghop and let’s help each other get back on track. (for our non-blogging friends, you are welcome to add your goals in the comments section).

Some questions to think about:

.

What worked well for you this week (please share as your tip might help someone else)?

What setbacks did you have and how did you go with them?

How did you feel physically and mentally during the week?

What are your personal goals for this coming week? Note that they don’t have to be only related to food and exercise. Getting a hold on a source of stress is just as valid, as is finally speaking with the person who has been causing you grief. Our weight issues are multi-faceted.

.

My Experience of the Last Week

I have had a week of struggling.  We’ve been so busy moving furniture out of the lounge / office, painting, getting curtains cleaned, carpet laid and new couches delivered …. that plus everything else that goes with this time of year and well, it’s lead to poor food choices.

The poor choices always seem to go hand in hand with my fatigue levels – looking for that quick burst of energy or that comfort from feeling knackered, but still having to soldier on.  It’s all ‘fueled’ by my sugar addiction too, which is deadly for Candida (which has flared up more too).  So, I must say I feel almost like I’m back to square one …. like I felt before losing the 12 Kg.  But, in trying to be positive, I lost a heap of weight in the first 4 weeks of my weight loss journey and I can do it again ready for Christmas!

So, for my week, what went well was consistently drinking 2-3 litres of water each day. Filling up water bottles for each day and putting them in the fridge ready for our hot days seems to be working well for me.

The major hiccup was that my diet went down the tubes for a bit (just didn’t keep up the low carb / no sugar approach).  I went into ‘survival’ mode, eating what was easy rather than what was good.  I had more carbs, even including pasta, which is something I haven’t had in a while, and the overall feeling from this, after the initial burst of energy, is just drained.  I love my carbs, but I just don’t seem to be able to balance my energy levels well with it in my diet at the moment.

.

I felt physically and mentally done in by the week and really dis-empowered, like I just couldn’t be bothered. Like I’d had enough and just want a fairy godmother to wave her wand and fix it for me!  I’m waking up way too early as well and that is not helping with energy levels during the day either.  I really have to sort out my handling of stress for it is such a trigger!

This week I want to focus on getting back to basics – diet (eliminating sugar / low carb), exercise (because I feel good when I do it) and using my spreadsheet.

.

.

Hope everyone has a week full of scale and non-scale victories!

Is there more to water than meets the eye?

The role of water in our lives is undeniable – we can’t survive without it for very long. But a greater understanding of the consciousness of water and its role in our life has come through the work of Professor Masaru Emoto from Japan.

So before we get into his work, it’s well known that if we want to lose weight, some of the reasons we need to keep up our water intake up is so that:

  1. We help our bodies flush out toxins, particularly those arising from the catabolism of the fat.
  2. Our bodies don’t hold onto fluid because it’s not sure when the next hit of water will be and it needs to keep the concentrations of things in the cells in balance.

But is that all there is to it?

Apparently not.

Dr Masaru Emoto, born in Yokohama in 1943, is a man at the leading edge of water research in the world.  But it’s not the usual water conservation type line of research, although his research will impact there too.

His research is based on looking at frozen water samples and observing the structure of the ice crystals formed.

At this point it doesn’t sound particularly ground breaking.  No two snow flakes are supposed to be the same so they say, so what could be so interesting?

What Dr Emoto found when he looked at the frozen water crystals under a dark field microscope was that clean and healthy water produces beautifully formed, geometric crystals.

Polluted water in Yodo River, Japan

But polluted water was just too ‘sick’ to create any crystals at all.

.

Here’s where it gets really interesting…….

.

.

.

.

.

Dr Emoto also looked at the affect that words and thoughts had on crystal formation in untreated distilled water.  Words were typed on paper and then taped onto glass bottles and left overnight.

Words "love and appreciation"

Positive, affirming words and music (eg. classical, relaxing, uplifting music) produce crystals like the  clean, healthy water.

Heavy metal music

.

.

.

.

Words 'you make me sick, I will kill you'

While negative words and music (eg. heavy metal) make the water crystals more like that of polluted water.

.

.

Finally, water crystals from very polluted sources were viewed initially and then again after the water was prayed over for 1 hour by a Buddhist Monk.  The prayer and positive intent restored the water back to its’ healthy, geometric crystalline structure.

So the implications for the world’s polluted water sources is tremendous, particularly in third world countries where money is not as readily available.

But what about us and the effect on an individual level?

Our bodies are made up of 70% water.

As an overweight person I am well accustomed to my own self-loathing of my body (which is 70 % water).

Louise Hay (Heal your Body, Heal your Life) recommends deeply looking into your own eyes in a mirror, and with meaning saying how much you love and value yourself.

So hard to do!

Imagine though if we were to focus on the water in our bodies and send it loving, positive, grateful and supportive comments.  Imagine how it could change us from the inside out. It feels like I would have less of a block or difficulty doing this than the Louise Hay approach.  It doesn’t feel like a lie.

So, I will try to work on doing this with the water in my body.  To help, like some of the experiments Dr Emoto conducted, I will write positive words on my 3 drink bottles (and the family’s as well).

Here’s a clip showing a summary of Dr Emoto’s work if you’ve got some time to have a look…

Not Waving …. Drowning!

What a few days I’ve had. Truthfully, I don’t think I’ve coped too well.

We’ve had a health challenge arise with my 10 year old girl, Snugglebunny. She’d had a sore ankle for about a week and following my intuition I took her to the hospital, rather than the local Doctor. They found no broken bones on the first x-rays, but then thought that with the symptoms she might have osteomyelitis (a bone infection).

Blood test came back showing there was no raging infection, but they wanted to schedule a bone scan to confirm it wasn’t in its’ early stages and if it wasn’t, was it a fracture that didn’t show on the x-rays initially? If that was the case, then they said they would be concerned that she has a fracture without a traumatic event causing it and that there might be an underlying condition.

So, we were sent home with crutches, with a bone scan to be scheduled (and canceled if her foot was better before then).

I wasn’t happy with having a bone scan if it wasn’t really necessary (if there were other treatment options) and as luck would have it, we were able to see Dr Kitty Campion, my medical herbalist, at short notice.

Kitty scanned Snugglebunny using the VegaTest machine and it confirmed there was no bacterial or viral infection. But it also showed a number of food intolerances at the moment and, even though she has a really good diet, an inability to assimilate her nutrition. This resulted in her being deficient in a number of key vitamins and other things. The results also showed that she is having problems with her pituitary and thyroid / para-thyroid and given the combination of results, is likely to be having trouble producing good quality bone.

So, not only is she likely to have a fractured foot, but she has a problem with the major gland in the body, the pituitary.

We’re doing hair analysis to see the exact extent of her vitamin and mineral deficiencies and Kitty recommended a number of things to start creating the environment for Snugglebunny’s body to heal. So, my daughter is off chocolate, sugar, salt, coffee (no big deal as she doesn’t have it!), tofu, gelatin and cheese for the time being, as well as having some herbal stuff / tissue salts.

Interestingly, we’re yet to hear from the hospital with regard to the bone scan.

All of this, coupled with getting my husband ready to go to Melbourne for a week (and him flying out on Friday), has left me in a bit of a spin.

I’m stressed, pressed for time, really tired and making ‘get me through the day’ poor choices. I need to sleep well. I need to eat well.

I seriously have to get a handle on all this. Something has to change. I’ve not had time to do the spreadsheet for this week, I’ve barely taken my vitamins, pro-biotics etc for my Candida, my water intake is down, the house is a mess, but at least I’ve got the dog out for a walk most days.

Sorry guys, but just needed to vent my frustration with my ability to cope. I know that the Candida will not be helping with the fatigue, sugar cravings etc, but I’m just over it! Signing off to go and get some sleep!

By the way, I now realise how crappy the font looks on my blog when you view it through Internet Explorer – completely different to how I see it on my Mac.  We’re working on a facelift in the next couple of weeks, but for now, this will have to do!

Liver’s Job and Candida

It’s not like me to post twice in a day, but I just listened to an interview online and it fitted in with the last post.

The interview was with Dr Mark Merriman, an MD in the States.  He is to be part of the Longevity Conference run by David Wolfe – starts on the 24th Sept.

Anyway, in the first half of the interview Dr Merriman was talking about the phases of Liver Detoxification and the research currently happening there.  I didn’t completely follow it all, but the gist of it was that there are 2 phases of detox in the liver – aptly named Phase 1 and Phase 2.

In Phase 1, toxic intermediaries are created as the first stage of trying to get rid of something yukky.  It involves using anti-oxidants.  In Phase 2, something is added to the Phase 1 intermediary to make it safer for the body to excrete.  This intermediary/toxin is then excreted in the bile, bound with fibre and which allows the toxin to pass through the colon safely.

Now here’s the kicker ….. if you have Dysbiosis, an unbalanced level of bacteria in your gut, like from Candida, these bacteria can cleave the anti-oxidant bound to the toxin away from it, releasing the toxin in the gastrointestinal tract to be re-absorbed into the body.

So, Candida can make your body absorb and carry around more toxins, making the liver work harder and harder to keep your body going.  And where do we tend to store toxins …… body fat!

Here’s the link if you want a listen – it’s in the first half of the interview: Dr Mark Merriman Interview with David Wolfe. – oops that didn’t work, so if you want to hear it, have your email address public in the comments and I’ll forward the email with the link.

Also the Longevity Conference is streaming via Webcast, so click on the link to find out more: Longevity Conference – this link didn’t work either, so comment stands as above.

Are My Scales Stuck?

Friday, 16th April, 2010

Well, it’s been a hectic week; lots of learning how to do the blog, setting it up ….. learning as I go.  But, it really did feel like a hard week.  Lots on with school holidays, not eating as consistently throughout the day (although still keeping well to the high protein / low carb plan).

The Scales and Mental Games

Probably the reason it feels not as enjoyable is that the weight hasn’t dropped off this week like the previous 3 weeks – it was a bit of a high seeing the scales go down so quickly.

How dopey!  I know all about plateaus.  I know my clothes are so much more loose on me.

I guess it’s a bit of fear that all this effort isn’t paying off.  How silly is that!  On reading what I just wrote, it sounds a bit like my mind trying to sabotage my efforts.  Trying to get me to give up and keep the weight on.

Support Network Around You

To try and shift to a positive note, my 12 year old said to me today how great I was looking in my t-shirts.  My Mum also struggles with her weight, but she has lost 3 Kg as well.  Unprompted she also had something to say that just made me feel good.  She said “I’m so proud of you and what you’re doing.”  Both those comments just came at the best time and were spontaneous, without any fishing for a compliment. Truly!

This just goes to remind me that it’s absolutely critical when you are embarking on such a significant and life-changing journey, to have supportive and encouraging family and friends around you.

We’re all human and will have times when we sail through with ease and times when we find it a bit more challenging.  Just remember though, even a teeny baby step, like going for a 5 minute walk instead of sitting down and reading the newspaper, is a step forward.

Pipe Cleaners and Water

Update – the IF2 (Intestinal Formula 2) capsules work a treat as a natural pipe cleaner!  They are much healthier and safer than some of the other things you can buy over the counter for constipation…

Another thing I started doing in the last 3 days that has worked well has been to fill up 3 x 750mL water bottles with water and a squeeze of lemon or lime juice.  I have one bottle that I’m drinking from and put the other 2 in the fridge.  I then know exactly how much I’m drinking as a minimum each day, rather than guessing.

Inspiration

You may speak your truth, but soothe your words with peace.

Tell your truth as soon as you know it. Yet tell it gently, kindly, and with compassion for the hearer. Someone needs to hear the truth from you … but that person
also needs your deep compassion as you speak it.

Seek to say what needs to be said with softness, and with a wide open heart. Remember, the truth can hurt … but it hurts a lot less if you care how it feels while
saying it.
