Star Chart for Mum!

.

Sounds a bit like a butt constricted activity, but doing a spreadsheet is really working for me on this Weigh-In Wednesday challenge.

I wanted something to keep me on track better, something to help me remember what sometimes seems like the little things. For me, they are the little things that add up over time and so I need to get them back to being habitual.

So, I created a very anal sounding spreadsheet to put on my fridge. Here is my Week 1 effort – looks a bit messy, but ticks were that I’d done the activity spot on, crosses were that I’d completely so not done it and the dot was that I’d done it but not completely at my target.

I enjoyed adding the ticks, dots and comments – not so much the crosses! But it does look a tad messy after a while.

I was talking to Lucy from Diminishing Lucy the other day and she said that she had the same sort of thing, but would colour the squares.

So, that got me thinking ….. first I applied it to Week 1 to see what it would look like.

Much nicer.

Coloured squares are 100% achieved target, diagonal line is where I attempted and did some of the target activity, but not all and blank is, once again, where I stuffed it! It was easier to add comments too, that will help with identifying triggers down the track.

But the really good thing to come out of it was a spin-off that I hadn’t anticipated.

I put Week 2’s chart on the fridge and started colouring. Fishlips, my 8yr old, is all interested and asks if she can colour it in for me…….. and here is born another layer of support. She said she’ll keep checking for when she can colour the next square!

And so, what started as a potentially anal exercise, has turned into a loving, supportive one on multiple levels.

.

What do you do to keep yourself on track and accountable?

You’re welcome. Amazing the synchronicity – it’s the second time in as many days since I got the link that it’s been appropriate to pass it on!

For others, it was a link about sleep and weight loss -http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2010/10/20/sleep-more-lose-weight.aspx

As for the food diary on the fridge – good idea too!

Thanks for the article about sleep you posted for me. It was really interesting and made so much sense.

I love your colour chart. I’ve been using a food diary, but instead of a diary I put a piece of paper up in my kitchen so EVERYONE can see it. It really makes me want to be good.

Its so good you kid is on board for you too. It is a real motivator.

That made me laugh ….imagining the frantic whisperings of parents who think they won’t get their space back!

Great idea and love the use of colour! Right now I’m living back at home with my parents at the ripe age of 35 so I think putting up a star chart on the fridge might be a bit of a worry to them that I’m never going to leave! But maybe once I get back home I can give it a whirl as well.

That’s where the kids or another person in the house helps! Harder to ignore when it’s on the fridge!

That’s awesome about the added support! I love the chart – I make them but never keep up with them.

Thanks. Maybe it like that for us because it’s more visible too?

This is fantastic! Well done you! I find anything that I document on paper or on the blog is so much stronger in my mind set to achieve than just saying it in my head.

I love seeing so clearly where you are at. Like it was so obvious when I
coloured it how Sunday was not a good day overall and I can figure out
what’s happening. Thanks for the colouring tip you legend!

Drop back for Weigh-In Wednesday and let me know how it goes. I think this will be a definite addition to the Transformational Diaries book (if you want more info on this go to http://transformationaldiaries.com/blog/archives/621)

I think the kids like the idea that they are helping Mum too! It sure is helping me.

OMG, this is a great idea. I never considered a star chart for myself, but it works so well with the kids. I’m going to give it a try. Thanks!

That is a BRILLIANT idea! What a great additional motivator! Good on you! You’ve inspired me, I’d better open a new word doc and do something similar!

Inspiration

You may speak your truth, but soothe your words with peace.

Tell your truth as soon as you know it. Yet tell it gently, kindly, and with compassion for the hearer. Someone needs to hear the truth from you … but that person
also needs your deep compassion as you speak it.

Seek to say what needs to be said with softness, and with a wide open heart. Remember, the truth can hurt … but it hurts a lot less if you care how it feels while
saying it.
